Birds are an amazingly salient feature of Manhattan life. Literally millions pass unseen overhead on certain migration nights. The city's green spaces provide helpful food resources for refueling, but its buildings and light pollution pose serious threats. Educating people about these challenges gives us many unique opportunities to put scientific research into conservation action.
Working remotely for the Lab of Ornithology, I often act as an ambassador here. The media coverage I get on different projects is a nice way of promoting all of the amazing things Cornell has to offer. I don't think there is any other institution that could afford me this level of flexibility while functioning among an incredible set of talented people and cutting-edge scientific endeavors.
